学生生活に対して、イメージがあるでしょう。在学生であるなら、自分のライフスタイルは当然よく知っています。社会人なら、新聞で書かれていることを参考にして、「今の大学生像」をもっているでしょう。私の研究領域は比較教育学で、研究テーマの一つが「大学生生活」です。実際の大学生生活を、統計データから探っています。主に法政大学の理工学部生を対象に実施した大学生生活調査、日本全国の統計調査1、アメリカの大学生生活調査2の３つを比較しました。自分の英語力のチェックも兼ねて、つぎの英語文を読んで、質問に答えてみませんか？
Hosei students in science and engineering spend quite a bit of time in classes, working at part-time jobs and commuting. In contrast, they spent very little time doing homework, and surprisingly not much time in clubs or just socializing with friends. Let’s look at how they compare in terms of class time and study time to Japanese averages nationwide1 and a small study of American students2.
Science and engineering (SE) students spend quite a bit of time in classes, but very little in preparation outside of the classroom. Nearly 60% of SE students in their first and second years took four or five 90-minute classes a day. Nationwide only about 30% of Japanese students take four or more classes per day. While there are no nationwide figures on class preparation time, nearly half of all SE students do no preparation on a regular basis; 30% spend less than one hour, while only 5% spend two to three hours per day. In the U.S., students spend only about four hours a day in classes. However, 60-70% of students studied about two hours a day. Only 25% did not study on a regular basis. In short, both Hosei SE and American students spend about six hours in classes or studying; SE students spend more time in class while American students spend more in class preparation. Both spend more than the average Japanese university student.
